The Dev-Team just launched its long-awaited iPhone 3G unlock, dubbed “yellowsn0w,” and while they’re still working out a few kinks (terming this release a 0.9 beta release), reports are already pouring in of successful unlocks. It’s also been confirmed that this release will work with the iPhone’s latest v2.2 firmware, and in fact requires that the phone be updated to v2.2 to run at all — much to the chagrin of folks who’ve held off on that update at the Dev-Team’s behest, we’re sure, but hopefully all will soon be forgotten in the new year…
YellowSn0w is out and it’s ready to rock. Here’s how to become SIM-independent.
NB: Install the latest 2.2 firmware before beginning this process.
1. First, download quickpwn and jailbreak your phone.
Pick your device. We want the iP3G, obviously.
2. Use the latest firmware to pwn your phone (download it from Apple here). This will allow you to install Cydia or Installer. If you just updated your phone or updated your phone on the computer you are running quickpwn on, you probably won’t have to download the firmware.

2. Then, add the repositories (DO NOT ENTER THESE URLs INTO YOUR BROWSER per Dev Team’s instructions).
3. Install yellowsn0w. Run it.

I am running firmware 2.2.1 on my iPhone 3G and have tried to run yellowsn0w several times but my iPhone is still locked!?!? Anyone have any ideas?

You can't unlock 2.2.1 with yellowsn0w, it has to be done with a Piggyback SIM
